Being adopted by a neighborhood cat

in

There is a cat that "belongs" to the family across the street.  I understand from another neighbor that they have two cats and they leave them outside all the time.  They leave their garage door up a crack and the cats go in when it is really cold or when they are hungry.

One of the cats, Cody, has been hanging around our place lately.  As we have gotten to know him, and he has gotten to know us, he has been more and more friendly.  He seemed curious about our house, so we let him in one day.  Now, he feels right at home.  He has found a spot on the bed in the guest room that is quiet, and he often takes a nap there.  He likes to be on a lap in the evening or morning.  And he knows how annoying it is for him to jump up on the table and lie down on the newspaper you are reading.

He has one flaw: he slobbers.  His canine teeth hang over his lips, so when he salivates, he drips saliva.  We've mostly gotten used to it.

In some ways, it is a great arrangement.  He visits, and we feel fine with putting him out when we have to leave, or just because we want to.  And he goes to the door and cries when he wants out.  He comes and goes a lot.

I feel like he has adopted us.
